Flight AI-171 Crashes Minutes After Takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport
AHMEDABAD, JUNE 12 — A major aviation tragedy unfolded on Wednesday morning as an Air India flight en route from Ahmedabad to London crashed moments after takeoff, near the Meghani area on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. The aircraft was carrying a total of 242 individuals, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
According to preliminary reports, Flight AI-171 lost altitude rapidly shortly after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport around 7:35 AM. Witnesses in the Meghani locality reported hearing a loud explosion followed by thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the crash site.
Emergency Services Rushed to the Site
Within minutes, seven fire engines, along with multiple ambulances and disaster response teams, were dispatched to the crash site. Rescue operations are underway amidst significant wreckage and flames. The area has been cordoned off by police and emergency responders, who are also managing crowds and maintaining safety protocols.
Initial visuals from the site show charred debris spread across a wide radius, with parts of the aircraft’s fuselage visible. Several injured individuals have been rushed to nearby hospitals, though the exact number of casualties is yet to be officially confirmed.
Flight Details and Background
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was scheduled for a direct international flight to London Heathrow Airport. The aircraft reportedly encountered a technical failure shortly after takeoff, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
A senior official from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that a team of investigators has been dispatched to Ahmedabad to determine the cause of the crash. "It is too early to speculate on the reason. All data from the black box and voice recorder will be critical," the official said.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has been apprised of the incident, and Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed deep concern via social media, stating:
