Air India Flight AI 379 Makes Emergency Landing in Thailand Following Bomb Threat; 156 Onboard Safe
PHUKET/NEW DELHI, JUNE 12 — In a major mid-air security scare, Air India flight AI 379 bound for Delhi from Phuket was forced to make an emergency landing in Thailand after receiving a bomb threat onboard, Thai authorities and the airline confirmed on Wednesday.
The flight, which took off from Phuket International Airport at approximately 9:30 AM (local time), was carrying 156 passengers and crew members when the threat was reported during its ascent over the Andaman Sea. In line with international aviation security protocols, the pilot immediately alerted air traffic control and diverted the aircraft back to Phuket.
Swift Emergency Response in Thailand
Upon receiving the distress signal, the Royal Thai Air Force and local airport emergency services were placed on high alert. The aircraft executed a wide loop maneuver over the Andaman Sea to avoid densely populated areas before safely landing back at Phuket airport.
“Passengers are being safely escorted from the plane, flight AI 379, in line with emergency plans,” said an official from Thailand's aviation security agency, adding that no injuries were reported and all passengers are safe.
The plane was promptly moved to a secure area of the airport. Bomb disposal units and security personnel have since been deployed to inspect the aircraft thoroughly. The entire airport terminal has been put on heightened security, although regular operations remain unaffected.
Bomb Threat Details
Sources indicate that the bomb threat was received through an onboard note or communication during the initial phase of the flight. However, the exact nature of the threat — whether a written message, call, or electronic alert — is currently under investigation by Thai and Indian aviation authorities.
Air India officials confirmed that all passengers and crew were safely deboarded and are being provided with necessary support, including food, shelter, and alternate travel arrangements. The airline has also initiated its own internal security review.
Investigation Underway
Thailand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAT) and the Royal Thai Police have taken charge of the situation, coordinating with Indian diplomatic officials and Air India representatives on-ground. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of India has also been informed and will coordinate with Thai officials for further inquiry.
“The safety and well-being of our passengers is our highest priority. We are cooperating fully with authorities and ensuring all necessary support is extended to those onboard,” said an Air India spokesperson.
Passengers Share Their Experience
Several passengers took to social media to share their experiences. “The crew handled everything very calmly. We were told there was a security issue and not to panic. It was scary, but we’re thankful to be safe,” one traveler posted on X (formerly Twitter).
International Security Concerns
This incident comes amid rising concerns over aviation security globally. Authorities are now examining whether the bomb threat was a hoax or part of a more coordinated attempt to disrupt air travel in the region.
If the threat turns out to be false, legal action may be pursued against the individual or entity responsible for creating panic under international aviation laws.
