GST Reform 2025: Government Slashes GST Rates on Essentials, Healthcare, Education, Automobiles & More

New Delhi, 4 September, 2025 — Bringing festive cheer to households, farmers, and businesses across India, the Government of India has unveiled the Next-Gen GST Reforms 2025. Announced as a “historic Diwali gift for the nation,” the reforms aim to lower the cost of living, strengthen MSMEs, and fuel the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

The sweeping changes include reduced GST rates on daily essentials, healthcare, education items, agricultural equipment, automobiles, and electronics, making them significantly more affordable for common citizens.

Big Relief on Daily Essentials

Everyday consumer goods will now become cheaper with a sharp reduction in GST rates. Items like hair oil, toothpaste, toilet soap, toothbrushes, and shaving cream will now attract just 5% GST instead of 18%. Similarly, butter, cheese, dairy spreads, namkeens, bhujia, utensils, and baby products will see lower rates. Even sewing machines and parts, widely used in households and small businesses, will now be taxed at only 5%.

Healthcare Sector Benefits

Healthcare has been made more affordable under the reforms. Individual health and life insurance policies are now exempt from GST, while essential medical items such as thermometers, medical-grade oxygen, diagnostic kits, glucometers, and corrective spectacles have moved to the lower 5% bracket. This measure is expected to ease medical expenses for millions of families.

Affordable Education for All

Education-related supplies have also received a big boost. Maps, charts, globes, notebooks, exercise books, pencils, sharpeners, crayons, and erasers are now completely GST-free, making them more accessible to students and reducing the financial burden on parents.

Support for Farmers and Agriculture

In a strong push for the farming community, the government has slashed GST rates on tractor tyres, tractors, bio-pesticides, drip irrigation systems, sprinklers, and agricultural machinery. These essential tools will now fall under the 5% GST category, down from earlier rates of 12% and 18%. This move is expected to boost agricultural productivity and reduce input costs for farmers.

Automobile Sector Made Cheaper

Vehicle buyers also have reason to celebrate this festive season. GST on petrol, LPG, and CNG hybrid cars (≤1200 cc, ≤4000 mm), as well as diesel cars (≤1500 cc, ≤4000 mm), has been cut from 28% to 18%. Three-wheelers, motorcycles (≤350 cc), and transport vehicles will also benefit from the same reduction. The move is expected to boost automobile sales and provide relief to both personal and commercial vehicle owners.

Electronics and Appliances See Tax Cuts

Middle-class families will now find popular home appliances more affordable. GST on air conditioners, televisions above 32 inches, monitors, projectors, and dishwashing machines has been reduced from 28% to 18%. The decision is expected to stimulate demand in the electronics sector and encourage greater domestic consumption.
